Alison Kilgallon from Bristol makes these warm and washable jumpers for ex-bat hens.

Alison decided to create the jumpers when she saw the sorry state of ex-bats after release from their cages.

“I thought it was such a shame that they were let out to the vagaries of the British weather without any protection either from sun, wind or cold, so I decided to do something about it and started knitting,” she said.

“Ex-battery hens are very friendly and readily take to the jumpers. The colours also help to identify each hen until something recognisable grows again. They do look very cute as well … or am I biased?

“I wouldn’t like to run around in all weathers without any clothes on, would you?”
