My chickens are sleeping in their nest box, not on the perch. What can I do?

Ensure that the perch is higher than the next boxes (chickens will roost at the highest point) but not so high that they can’t get on to it.
Smaller breeds may need a height of around 6 inches, larger breeds will need higher. I usually aim for a perch as high as the birds shoulders.
