I am looking to keep four to six chickens and although they will all be heavyweight breeds, I hadn’t intended to have more than one of each breed. I’ve been told that this is a disaster waiting to happen, but have not be told why.

Charlotte Popescu says:

This will not be a disaster. As long as the heavy breeds you choose are roughly the same size and age, and come from a reputable breeder, then they will be fine. If they have plenty of space, so much the better. Buying hens from different places could be a disaster as they will be stressed after their move and may infect each other, for example with mycoplasma (a nasty chicken cold); they will also not know each other and may fight while establishing a pecking order.
