Durham Hens, founded and run by Margaret and Alec Manchester, has been voted ‘Best Poultry Supplier’ by readers of a national gardening magazine
Located near Tow Law in County Durham, Durham Hens supply quality point of lay pullets, pure breed chickens, hen houses and poultry supplies.
They offer ten varieties of hybrid hens in various colours; these are excellent layers and make great pets. The chickens run free-range in an organic, woodland environment and are fed on top quality, Garvo chicken food, resulting in happy, healthy hens.
Durham Hens also raise a selection of pure breed and rare chickens, selling hatching eggs, chicks and growers.
Before launching Durham Hens, Margaret taught archaeology at a local college. Now she uses her teaching skills to run courses on keeping chickens. These are very popular, with people traveling enormous distances to attend.
They also provide a ‘Hen Holiday’ service, boarding for chickens in a peaceful woodland setting. Hens stay in Durham Hen Houses with spacious runs. These practical houses are manufactured at Durham Hens and were designed by Alec, a chartered engineer with loads of ‘mucking out’ experience.
