November 2007: An experiment has shown that the average hen walks 1,460 miles in its lifetime.

The figure was calculated at Clarence Court, the free-range egg producer. The experiment involved attaching a tiny counter to the hen’s leg and monitoring the results over a 16-hour period. The birds varied tremendously in the way they used their time and, as with people, there were sedentary and sporty types. The average bird took more than 7,000 steps – nearly half a mile. However, some health fanatics took an amazing 16,245 steps – a mile a day.
