Organisers of the 13th annual Scottish Smallholder Festival are reporting strong interest in the event from industry and the public – and The Country Smallholder is offering you the chance to win tickets!

This is the second year the festival will be held at the Royal Highland Centre near Edinburgh and features a wide range of livestock classes, traditional skills demonstrations, and Scotland’s only pig show. In a first for the organisation, breeders will be able to sell their pigs on-site, a move that has been welcomed by the British Pig Association.

The event also features a range of competitions, demonstrations on bread making, dry stone walling, hedge laying, and talks by leading industry experts.
Following on from last year’s success which attracted capacity audiences, chef, food campaigner and author, Wendy Barrie, will return to give a series of cookery demonstrations.

Alan Jamieson, pig steward for the festival said: “The festival allows smallholders to come together at the end of a busy season, learn from each other and share best practices.

“People are becoming increasingly interested in how their food is produced and where it comes from. We are getting the message across to the public that smallholders are producing high-quality food in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way at a time when events such as Ukraine have shown just how important it is to have domestic food security.

“With new land reform legislation making its way through the Scottish Parliament, the number of opportunities to become a smallholder could increase, so the festival is also an opportunity to find out more about what the sector is all about.”

Supported by the Scottish Government, the festival takes place on October 19. Tickets are £12, with free entry for children under 14 accompanied by a ticket holder. Buy tickets at www.festival.scot.
