MAY 29, 2009: Politicians from all the major parties in Scotland have called on the Government to reverse the EU’s decision to introduce compulsory EID for sheep.

During a debate at Holyrood, MSPs gave their backing to a motion which called for the Government to push Europe hard on the issue. They heard that a recent pilot project – the results of which will be published next month – proved the system was expensive and unworkable, and warned it could lead to a further decline in the Scottish flock. A number of MSPs from across the political spectrum warned the increased cost would be too much to bear for many of Scotland’s farmers.
