The Country Smallholder is aimed at the ever-increasing UK audience interested in living a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable way of life. From people already living on a smallholding, to allotment owners; from those with a couple of acres of land, to those aspiring to get more out of their garden or even window box. With 73% of UK residents claiming to want to live more sustainably post Covid, The Country Smallholder has something for everyone.

Country Smallholders website, social channels and magazine will provide free vet advice; helpful practical features on all aspects of smallholding, from keeping chickens to crop rotation; information on poultry, pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, and alpacas; rural crafts; property; small tractors and machinery, as well as keeping readers up to date with all the latest news and innovations.

Our contributors range from established smallholders to those just starting out in their journey – all sharing the highs and lows of living off the land.

Editor – Liz Wright

Liz was brought up in West London, and her parents were alarmed when her school project, aged 6 years old, was on rearing farm animals. The family moved to the Buckinghamshire countryside when Liz was 12, and she soon managed to get a pony and help out local farmers. As she grew up, she worked at a farming company, selling cereal seeds and acting as a seed crop inspector before being an assistant manager at a farming co-operative. She had always written for publications, so when the opportunity to edit Smallholder came up in the eighties, she changed careers, something she has never regretted. She currently edits The Country Smallholder and resides on her smallholding in the Cambridgeshire fens, where she tends to her poultry, ponies, vegetable patch, and an array of fruit trees and bushes. In the past, she has owned and lambed sheep and ‘rescued’ a Jersey cow, a Highland cow, and a commercial pig named Audrey. The descendants of the Golden Guernseys she owned can still be seen at some of the London City Farms, a movement that Liz supports. She is also a Council member of the Donkey Breed Society and a member of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists, where she has visited several countries, including Uganda, to look at agriculture.
