FEB, 13, 2012: THE NFU has urged food manufacturers and restaurant chains to avoid imported battery cage eggs. It has published the names of the ‘good egg’ companies that have pledged not to source eggs and egg products produced in battery cages, which were outlawed across the EU on January 1.

The NFU said it had been working with Defra to establish which of the country’s leading supermarkets, food chains, food processors and manufacturers have committed to only sourcing eggs produced in higher welfare systems still permitted, including ‘enriched’ cages. The list published shows the all big UK retailers, including Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Iceland and the Co-op have made the commitments, at least for their own brands. The NFU also initially named a number of big UK food businesses it said it had ‘still not heard from’. MORE: www.nfuonline.com/News/ The—good-egg—list/
