JUNE 2008: Leaked findings from a government report reveal that biofuels have played a role in the rise of food prices across the world.

It is understood that the Gallagher Report, which is due for release onFriday 27 June, also doubts the environmental benefit of some firstgeneration biofuelsTransport secretary, Ruth Kelly, ordered the head of the Renewable Fuels Agency, Professor Ed Gallagher, to chair an investigation into the indirect impacts of biofuel production in February in response to spiralling food prices and pressure from the green lobby. The report will make unhappy reading for Gordon Brown who could now be forced to consider a moratorium on the mandatory target for all transport fuel to contain 2.5 per cent renewable fuel this year, a figure set to rise to 5 per cent in 2010 and possibly 10 per cent in 2020. The targets were only introduced in April and their scrapping would represent an embarrassing about-turn for the Government.
