FEBRUARY 10, 2008: Eggs from battery reared hens have been banned from schools and councilbuildings in a local council in the Liverpool area of the UK.
All eggs now being used by schools, Halton Council staff restaurants, and catering staff at the council’s Stobart Stadium Halton, will be free range, according to reports in the Liverpool Daily Post.The move follows an animal cruelty campaign by chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver to ban battery chickens from the nation’s dinner plates. A European-wide ban on battery eggs is due to come into force in 2012.Halton councillor Phil Harris, executive board member for school meals is reported in the Liverpool Post as saying: “This shows we are taking the treatment of chickens seriously in Halton.”
