JUNE 16, 2008: PREVENTING run-off from dipping areas and avoiding livestock polluting ground and surface water are key points in the NFU’s campaign to prevent sheep dip pollution.
The campaign is a joint stakeholder initiative looking to help farmers and contractors develop best practice for sheep dipping.NFU livestock board chairman Alistair Mackintosh said farmers had a strong interest in self-regulation and obtaining disposal licences before dipping, to ensure they remained on the right side of compliance.“It enables them to retain access to a wide range of technical treatments, as well as preventing pollution, and to avoid penalties to SPS payments under cross compliance rules,” he said.“Previously there has been little guidance for farmers on how to improve sheep dipping practice and protect the environment. But this initiative aims to raise awareness and develop a best practice working guide.”
