MARCH 19, 2010: Plans for an 8,100 cow super-dairy in Lincolnshire have been opposed by 40 MPs.

Eric Martlew, Labour MP for Carlisle, tabled the Commons Early Day Motion deploring the high intensity dairy unit on March 8. So far 40 out of 646 members have backed the motion. The motion reads: “That this House is firmly opposed to the proposed dairy unit in Lincolnshire housing up to 8,100 cows that will be kept indoors for most of the year.” EDMs are rarely debated but act as an opportunity for MPs to publicise their views on specific topics. Mr Martlew said: “Cows should be put out to pasture instead of being raised mainly indoors in the Lincolnshire plant.”
