A robust, placid layer from Holland
Originating in the Barneveld district of Holland, these lay dark brown eggs which are one of the main attractions to this robust breed. Being poor flyers, due in part to their heavy nature, the Barnevelder is easily contained behind a medium-height fence, and is at home either in a run or free-range. Allegedly developed from, amongst others, the gold laced Wyandotte, Croad Langshan, Cochin and Brahma, a good quality show bird will have stunning feather colour, making it a very attractive bird for exhibition and garden alike. Colours include black, double laced (black with a red-brown edging), partridge and silver. Prone to Marek’s disease, this breed is best vaccinated as chicks.
