SEPTEMBER 16, 2010: It will be sweetness, light, learning and baking on display at The 2010 National Honey Show at St George’s College Weybridge, Surrey, from October 28 – 30, and 1,000 exhibits will be judged.
One of the largest and most highly regarded honey shows in the world, this year’s entries and exhibitors are expected to come from as far afield as Rodrigues, a small island in the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe.* On display will be rows and rows of jars of gleaming prize-winning honey and among the 200 hundred classes of hive related products, bee-themed craft work, essays and photography is one for honey beers from specialist micro-breweries. This is the opportunity, too, for keen cooks to show off their honey-baking skills either by making up one of the show’s traditional honey cake recipes or entering their own favourite recipe for small honey cakes, biscuits and cookies, sweets and chocolates. Francis Capener, Show Secretary, said: “The National Honey show goes from strength to strength, attracting an incredibly high standard of entries in all classes, and increasing numbers of visitors. “This year we have been able to extend our exhibition space to give everyone a more enjoyable experience when they visit this celebration of honey which comes at the end of a beekeeping year.”Away from the competitive classes, a lecture programme given by a panel of international bee and honey experts will look at some of the challenges facing beekeepers around the world, how bees forage in the ‘floral supermarket’, how to become a backyard beekeeper and an insight into the story of Manuka honey. A programme of workshops appealing to beekeepers and the public alike will offer tuition on how to make your own wax flowers, taking better bee pictures, advice on becoming a bee farmer, and how to pass BBKA exams. Trade and educational stands will give beekeepers and the public the opportunity to stock up with equipment, and get information and advice on how to take up beekeeping. The show is held at St George’s College, Weybridge, Surrey KT15 2QS, 01932 839300, where ample free parking is available. Opening hours: 28 October 1.45 – 6pm; 29 October 9am – 6pm and 30 October 9 – 4.30pm. Admission is free to the Trade Exhibitors’ Hall and Surrey and London Beekeepers’ exhibitions.
