Machinery supplier, Siromer, offers its expert advice on flair mowers, toppers and finishing mowers
A flail mower is a heavy-duty machine with rotating knives (flails) that chop and mulch vegetation. It’s commonly used for cutting tall grass, brush, and even small trees. Flail mowers are ideal for rough terrain, dense vegetation, and areas with debris or obstacles. A flail mower is generally better suited for cutting fields with rougher terrain, dense vegetation, or areas that may have debris or obstacles. making them more capable
of handling tougher cutting conditions. They can handle taller grass, brush, and even small trees more effectively.
All Siromer flail mowers have the advantage of an opening back with three settings. Instead of a solid back or rear panel, these flail mowers have an opening or rear discharge mechanism.
The opening back allows the cut vegetation to be discharged out of the rear
of the flail mower. This advantageous design feature facilitates the efficient dispersal of cut material when mowing large areas, or long dense material, reducing the need for frequent stops to clear the mower deck. The three settings on the Siromer flail mower allow the user to decide the level of mulching or dispersal required.
The cutting height on the Siromer flail mower is adjusted on the roller. By raising or lowering the roller, you can control how closely the flail blades cut the vegetation. This allows you to adapt to different grass lengths or terrain conditions and prevent scalping. Scalping is when
the mower cuts the grass too short, damaging the turf or leaving bare spots. By properly adjusting the roller height, you can ensure that the flail blades maintain an appropriate cutting height and avoid turf damage.
In addition the roller helps stabilise the flail mower and maintain a consistent cutting height. It rolls over the ground, providing support and ensuring an even cut across uneven or undulating terrain. It can help level the ground by pressing down on any uneven areas, resulting in a more uniform mowing surface.
TOPPERS
A topper, also known as a rotary topper or grass topper, is a lighter machine designed for maintaining grassy areas. They have a horizontal rotating blade that cuts the grass cleanly. Toppers are suitable for maintaining pasture, meadows, or fields with shorter grass and minimal obstructions.
Siromer grass toppers are known for their durability and reliability, with a galvanised bed, they are designed to last a lifetime. The cutting height can be adjusted on the skids to suit different terrain conditions and grass lengths, with an optional wheel to improve manoeuvrability.
FINISHING MOWER
A finishing mower is a precision cutting machine used for creating a manicured look on lawns, golf courses, sportsfields, or any area where a clean and even cut is desired.
It has multiple blades and a wide cutting deck, providing a smooth finish on well-maintained grass. With a full rear discharge, the cut grass is evenly spread out behind the mower as it moves forward, creating a clean and neat appearance on the mowed surface. This design is often preferred for applications where aesthetics and a well-manicured look are desired, such as lawns, sports fields or golf courses. The advantage of a full rear discharge is that it eliminates the need for a side discharge chute, reducing the chances of clippings being where they might be unwanted. It also helps distribute the clippings more evenly, reducing the risk of clumping or uneven distribution. It’s important to consider the specific characteristics of your field, including the terrain, vegetation density, and any potential obstacles, when deciding between a flail mower, topper and finishing mower.
