Scheduled for 14th October, the 2023 Scottish Smallholder Festival will feature a brand new learning area as a result of an exciting partnership with SRUC, Scotland’s Rural College.
This year’s event, which is being held at the Royal Highland Centre for the first time, will feature the SRUC Theatre, a key venue for the seminar programme of the festival. Various talks and workshops will be held throughout the day, providing professional and hands on education for everyone attending.
Talks taking place in the SRUC Theatre will have a strong practical focus, from a ‘Sheep MOT’ through to advice on infrastructure such as water sources and fencing. Visitors to the festival will be able to learn key skills to enhance their own production and livestock welfare.
The SRUC Theatre is a brand new and unique feature of this year’s event and SRUC consultants will be on hand there throughout the day to promote their services and expertise.
What else is on at the festival this year?
• Livestock showing competition for sheep, goats, and pigs (subject to confirmation)
• The festival also hopes to hold a small alpaca show
• This year, to mark the 50th anniversary of RBST, the Festival will feature the RBST Scottish Championships with the crowning of a Grand Champion
• Show and parade of native breed equines, other equines (and alpacas, in the absence of a show) of interest to smallholders
• Showcase of cattle
• Showcase for breed societies
• Seminar and demonstration programme
• Trade and small business exhibitions, with many stands targeting products specifically at smallholders
• Garden, Craft and Food competition
• Rural skills exhibition
